All Server Rooms and DATA CENTRES are essentially buildings or rooms that mainly provide space and power and cooling for IT infrastructure. They centralise operations, the company’s IT equipment, and store, share and manage data. Companies rely on the reliability of Data Centres to ensure that their day-to-day IT operations always work. As a result, security and reliability are often the highest priority in Data Centres.

 

We will look at the different types of DATA CENTER

Hyperscale DATA CENTER

  • A Hyperscale DATA CENTER is a facility owned and operated by a company such as AWS, Microsoft, Google or Apple
  • They offer a robust, scalable application and storage service portfolio for individuals or businesses
  • Hyperscale computing is essential for cloud and big data storage
  • Has from 500 cabinets upwards and at least 3,000 square metres of space
  • Typically have at least 5,000 servers connected by an ultra-high-speed network with a large number of optical fibres

Co-location DATA CENTER

  • Colocation Data Centres consist of a single owner who sells space, power and cooling to a number of corporate and hyperscale customers in a specific location
  • Colocation offers services such as SaaS, PaaS, among others. This allows companies to scale and grow their business with minimal complexity and low cost
  • Colocation server facilities offer technical guidance for companies that do not know what they need
  • Different colocation facilities may have a slightly different model so some operators provide technical design and guidance and specification for migrating customers
  • Depending on the colocation operator, you can rent from 1 to as many as 100 racks and in some cases ¼ or ½ rack is available
  • A colocation data centre can accommodate hundreds if not thousands of individual customers

Corporate server room

  • A corporate data centre is a facility owned and managed by the company it serves
  • A server room often built on-site, but in some cases may also be located off-site
  • Some sections of the Data Centre may be segregated to separate different sections of the company
  • May use external companies for construction and maintenance
  • Has from 10 racks upwards and can have up to 40MW+ of power

Edge DATA CENTER

Edge DATA CENTRES are small Data Centres that are located close to the edge of the network. They provide the same facilities found in traditional Data Centres, but take up less space and are located closer to end users and devices. The concept is based on edge processing. Edge processing centres around the principle of bringing processing closer to the data source to reduce latency and bandwidth utilisation. Simply put, edge computing takes processes that would normally take place in the cloud and moves them to more localised locations such as a user’s PC, IoT device or edge server. By moving these processes to the edge of the network, communication between the client and server takes place over shorter distances, thus reducing latency and bandwidth usage.
